Barcelona is the capital city of the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain and is the second largest city in the country. It is situated between the mouths of the rivers Llobregat and Besos along the Mediterranean coast. The city has a total of 4.5 kilometres of coastline and boasts seven beaches. The city’s oldest and most popular beaches are Barceloneta and Sant Sebastia which are each over 1000 metres in length. These two beaches are separated from the other beaches by the Olympic Port.

The five other beaches are the Nova Icaria, Mar Bella, Llevant, Nova Mar Bella and Bogotell and these beaches were opened when the city was restructured to host the Summer Olympics in 1992. The sand on the beaches of Barcelona is constantly replenished from quarries to compensate for the damage caused by storms. Given the large number of beaches and other water bodies in the city, it is no wonder that it is famous for various water sports, and many tourists visit the city especially for this purpose.

Another reason why Barcelona is so popular for water sports is that it is situated in the Costa Brava. This term literally means rugged or wild coast, and is a stretch of coastline from Blanes (which is 60 kilometres away from Barcelona) to the French Border. Although some parts of the Costa Brava have been highly developed to accommodate the millions of tourists that visit, there are some areas in this region that are still untouched. The strip of the Costa Brava that is confined to Barcelona is one of the more developed areas, with lots of tourists visiting annually.

The beautiful beaches of Barcelona are ideal or tourists who want to sunbathe, or have a quick swim in the sea. However, for the more adventurous tourist, the day can be spent by taking part in one of the many adventurous water sports on offer. Among the more popular adventure sports in this area are water skiing, kayaking, jet skiing, wind surfing as well as virtually any other kind of water sport that you can imagine. The Costa Brava is also the perfect area to discover the thrills of the sailboat.
